Background
Pharmacogenomics involves identifying an individual's response to a drug based on their genetic, genomic, and proteomic profiles. The promise of the emerging field of pharmacogenomics, along with the expanded development and approval of new targeted cancer therapies are key trends converging to create important new opportunities in cancer research and control.
In January of 2008, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) formed the Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacogenomics Working Group (PPWG). The PPWG is comprised of more than 40 interdisciplinary scientists from across all divisions of NCI. The group's mission is to develop recommendations for a targeted research agenda, to support NCI's development of a comprehensive and interdisciplinary pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacogenomics cancer research program. The working group drafted preliminary recommendations earlier this year which will be sent to all registered participants for review prior to the meeting. (For more information about the PPWG, please see http://riskfactor.cancer.gov/areas/pharmaco/)
To ensure the PPWG's recommendations help NCI focus on the most promising research opportunities that will move the field of pharmacogenomics forward and integrate research in the areas of basic science, clinical trials and the population sciences, we need input from experts, like yourself, in the cancer research community. We would like to invite you to attend a workshop on July 21, 2009 in Bethesda, MD at the National Institutes of Health, Cancer Pharmacogenomics: Setting a Research Agenda to Accelerate Translation.
There is no registration fee to attend this workshop, however; participants are required to pay for their own travel and/or lodging expenses. Due to space limitations, registration for this conference is by invitation only.
We hope you will be able to participate in this workshop. Please register by June 29, 2009. If you have any additional questions about this workshop, please feel free to contact us.
